Ordinary Eve
Born to Serve
Are you being served?
Being a servant isn’t exactly high on the list of most people’s priorities in the 21st century is it? Let’s face it - it’s not hip to be humble. Being the boss, having the limelight, someone to answer our phone – these are what our ambitions at work are. Those who serve others are generally considered to have menial, un-exiting jobs. Most self-help books show us how to ‘get the most out of' life, not how to put more in. And nowadays the focus for marriage seems to be finding r someone to meet your needs rather than looking to see how you can meet your partner’s needs. Should the average Christian be any different?
Optional extras?
If you are a Christian that’s fantastic, but becoming a Christian is not enough. We were saved in order to serve God . Serving God through helping others should be the heart of what we do, because we love God – it is not an optional extra.
Fulfilment
Are you on this earth just to exist or are you here to truly live? Before you were made, God chose you – that’s amazing! But for what? Believe it or not, there are roles that only you can play and purposes only you can fulfil. God has given each of us a unique set of abilities, gifts, and experiences to enable us to do that work. You have a ‘mission’ but it’s up to you to accept it – don’t let fear or feelings of unworthiness put you off. Whether this ‘mission’ is being really welcoming on the door at church or becoming a missionary overseas, serving Christ will give your life great significance and value. When we finally meet God face to face, don’t you want him to say to you “well done my good and faithful servant” * ?
True greatness
“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant” ** . Jesus had a following of thousands yet he still made breakfast for his disciples and washed their feet. If the Creator of the universe can deign to humble himself by taking on a human body and dying for us, what greater motivation do we need to serve Him? If some day you become fantastically famous for some great achievement and if people throw confetti at you from high rise office buildings as you pass by, just remember - you are never too great to stack the chairs at church or get stuck into the washing up.
The chique shall inherit the earth?
So, as our society becomes more obsessed with image and in idolising talent-less wannabes who have never done anything useful with their lives, remember what true greatness is, your worth, your inheritance and the wonderful God you serve.
